COLOUR / TAIWAN — Space Memories

Lin, Ya-Ping

Living in this land, we all share a common memory whether here in Taipei or Tainan. When we were children, we played in the streets, there were low red brickwalls and green climbing plants, also the smells of fried-fish from Xiaoming’s house wafted from their iron door. One moment we were running to the playground calling and shouting happily, the next we were on our way to that dazzling grocery store helping Mom to get a bottle of soy sauce. All these sweet memories of everyday life are intertwined by space and colour, it is also the extension of our memories.

When I have the opportunity to enter a space and feel it, it’s very easy to find a language within. The blue iron gate where they were selling snacks, the red door in Good Old Days, the green tin roof standing firm on almost every household. As we ride along an old lane, we always see different shades of green, be it tiles or just painted and decorated with some stripes of maroon or dark yellow that I could never differentiate. I started to cherish the flavor, the flavor of home and that of the alley. And I tried to present a picture, the picture of childhood and the memories of Taiwan. Ariel records the “colors” in her daily life and re-collects them. In her works, she demonstrates this boldness of innovation while not losing the sense of the past. Being inspired by her, I found my own Space Memory.

I devote myself into artworks with the enthusiasm of pursuing the image of Taiwan. However, in the spectrum of western palette, it lacks the one and essential element to picture “the sense of Taiwan”. In 2009 GEISAI TAIWAN, “Place-Tainan”, “Paint ours colour”series of works are her self-exploration toward the aesthetics of our land, from her living room to the streets in Tainan. “Place-Tainan”, tells warm stories using cold gray then shifting into bright yellows, dark greens, indigo, crimson. She created a fun-packed taste of Taiwan, therefore let’s explore our feelings through paintings, let’s experience the aesthetic of color.
